Shiroco's is proud to be working with other local Benicia merchants on First Street to go Green with Shopportunities!

We expect to kick off this initiative in conjunction with the Benicia In Bloom annual spring celebration, being held on March 15th and 16th. Many stores, including Shiroco's, will be having events to demonstrate their commitment to the beauty and sustainability of our planet--as well as to celebrate local and international products that do the same.

Among our activities on these days will be:

• A celebration of the beauty of nature, with free flower bouquets for everyone who makes a purchase at one of the 30 or more participating stores throughout the weekend.
• Our involvement in the Green Bag campaign, where merchants will make available cloth shopping bags, made of recycled materials, that can be used and re-used on return buying trips to any store in Benicia.
• And the tasting and testing of wonderful gourmet items made or made available by local food artisans.

In addition, it has alway been a focus of our work to make Shiroco's friendly to artisans and manufacturers whose products reflect a tribute to sustainability. To move in this direction, we continue:

• Buying as much as possible from small artists (generally from Latin American countries and tropical lands) who use local resources to make their artistic pieces.
• Making sure that products such as these (including those using shells and other natural materials) do not further endanger the earth or its many resources.
• Offering fresh flowers and other perishables (including local gourmet foods) that minimize unneeded chemicals and dangerous working conditions.
• Working with other local stores and community projects to find more ways to ensure that our work celebrates the earth and the work of its people.

The City of Benicia has many wonderful historic, artistic and community firsts. Not the least of which is the fact that we are the first formally organized city in the State of California. In addition, the so-called "California Gold Rush" started here at the end of our downtown First Street, beginning what many believe to be one of the most significant events in American history.

Below is a map showcasing Shiroco's and sharing some details about the "Firsts" of Benicia. We expect to have more details in the future as important aspects of these realities find their way into our branding and marketing plans.
